Azami

彼岸 菖蒲

Thistle in hard ground  ·  The Far Shore

Born with everything the clan ever wanted — and none of the answers she did. The most complete heir to Yae's legacy in living memory, and still a girl who went into a petrified forest at eight years old and never told anyone what she found there.

Azami — the thistle, the flower that grows in hard ground. Higan — the far shore, the other side. She was named for difficult places before she was old enough to choose one.

Azami Higan was born with what no one in the clan's recorded memory had ever held at once: both Currents of Ki flowing through her from birth, and the Seireigan, manifested on its own. The dual flow belongs to perhaps five in a hundred of the Higan. The Dōjutsu, to one in ten. Both, from birth — it had simply never happened. The clan called her the Princess of the Seireigan: not a political title, but a spiritual one, naming her the most complete inheritor of Yae Thunder Sakura's legacy the Higan have.

It should read like a blessing. It was a weight. A child born with everything becomes a symbol before she is allowed to become a person — and Azami was made into one at four years old, taken from her mother to be shaped by the highest ranks of the clan. Where another of these pages tells the story of a girl with no bloodline who built everything herself, this is its mirror: the girl who was handed everything, and spent her life learning what it cost.

Everything she was given, she mastered. One question was never answered — not by any of it.

"What did the goddess see in me, in those three days?"

At eight years old she was sent alone into the White Ash Grove to find a single flower, and she came back three days later carrying it. What happened in the grove she has never told a living soul. She became everything the clan forged her to be — every Current, every phase of the Seireigan, the blade. And none of it ever answered the only question she actually carried. The power was total. The understanding she wanted was the one thing no training could unlock.

The Shield She Built

The Calm Is Armour

People meet her and call her composed. Serene. Untouchable. They are right, and they are missing the point.

The calm is not who she is. It is what she built. From the age of four — taken from her mother to be shaped by the highest ranks of the clan — she was treated as something that could not be allowed to break. A child handled that way learns stillness the way other children learn to walk. By the time anyone could have asked whether she wanted to be this way, the armour had already fused to the skin. She no longer knows exactly where it ends and she begins.

It is not emptiness. She feels everything — she simply processes it somewhere no one is invited. She does not react; she observes, absorbs, and acts only when action is the most honest answer to what she sees. The Higan call this discipline, and reward it. What it cost her is not in any clan record.

Azami in the garden
Physical

Appearance

Very pale skin, delicate features, and large eyes of a vivid blue — the universal mark of the Higan, the iris that every member of the clan carries. A natural rosy tint to the face that was never painted on. Small lips in a subtle dark red.

The Hair

Long, loose, parted in the middle. Pale blond at the root — and at the tips, a split that is not a fashion choice: the left side fades to vivid pink, the right to pale blue. They are the two Currents of Ki living in her body made visible. Pink for Flow and Speed; blue for Control and Density. She is, quite literally, two energies wearing the shape of a girl.

The Lycoris

A single Lycoris radiata — the Whisper of Inori — fixed at the left side of her head. It was placed there by the clan elders the day after she returned from the White Ash Grove at eight years old. It does not wilt. It does not dry. It does not lose colour. It lives as long as she lives — and if she dies, it dies with her. She has worn a living thing on her head, tied to her own pulse, since she was a child. No one ever asked her how that feels.

The Ceremony of Eight

The White Ash Grove

There is a forest at the edge of Higan land where the trees have turned to pale stone and no bird sings. They call it the White Ash Grove. Deep within it, fused to the roots, a goddess sleeps — Inori, motionless for millennia, holding inside her the artifact that once destroyed her sister.

The clan sends its children there. The task sounds simple: go in alone, find a single flower of the Whisper of Inori, and come back. What the task does not say is that no one controls how long it takes. No one goes with you. And the more of those red flowers you find along your path, the closer you are walking to the goddess herself.

Azami was eight years old. She took three days.

She came back carrying the flower. She did not say where she found it, or how, or what those three days held — the law of the grove is silence, and she kept it without being reminded. The ceremony was held the next day. The elders fixed the flower in her hair and named her Princess of the Seireigan.

She was eight years old, and she did not cry.

What the goddess saw in her down there, no one knows. Neither does she. It is the question she has carried ever since — through every Current she mastered, every phase of the eye she unlocked. She became the most complete heir the clan has, and the grove never gave the answer back.

What She Was Given

Bloodline & Powers

Born with both Currents and the Seireigan at once — something the clan's recorded memory had never seen.

In the end she mastered all of it: every Current, every phase, the blade. This is the full arsenal of the Princess of the Seireigan.

The People She Came From

Family

Raiku Higan

The father she never met

A widely recognised figure within the clan, a prodigy, exactly as she would become. He died three months before she was born — in an invasion of Miasma-corrupted demons that struck the borders of Inari Ōkami. She inherited his legend, his clan standing, and his absence. She has been compared to a man she never met for her entire life.

Muret

The brother · Pink Current alone

Her older brother carries the Pink Current alone — no blue, no Seireigan. He grew up in the shadow of a younger sister born with everything he was not. He has never voiced resentment, and most of the time does not feel it; what surfaces, now and then, is a quiet sadness he shares with no one. With Azami he uses her name, never her title — a small thing inside the Higan, and not a thing observers miss. She loves him and looks up to him, not in spite of his limits but because of them: he is her proof that a person can be remarkable without being a symbol. When she needs someone to see Azami and not the Princess of the Seireigan, she looks to him. The silence between them is not empty — it is accumulated, and neither has learned yet how to cross it.

Sumi

The mother who is not there

She does not remember her mother's face. She does not know her given name — only that she carries the Higan name. She tells herself two stories about it. One she believes: that her mother abandoned her — could have fought, could have insisted, and did not. One she knows is truer and refuses: that the clan is not an institution you defeat when it decides it wants a child, and Sumi almost certainly never had the power to win that fight. Azami chooses the anger. Anger is simpler to carry than the thought that the person meant to protect her simply could not. It is the one wound the armour was never able to close.

The People Who Shaped Her

Connections

Rōen

Rōen

From the time she was six, Rōen was her personal guard — always present, watching, correcting, helping. Years in close proximity turned him into something more like company, and she began to confide in him in ways she did with no one else. He reported what he heard to the clan — but not all of it. Only what would not harm her, or what she needed help to solve.

That edited loyalty, which he likely told himself was protection, is also the proof that something in him had already shifted toward her. When she turned fifteen the clan told him to stop actively guiding her. He stayed in the house anyway. He always has.

Shio Higan

Shio Higan

A clan boy a little over a year older than her, Blue Current. He met her when she was seven — watched her at training not because she was the Princess of the Seireigan, but because she struck him as interesting, as a person, which almost no one bothered to see her as. He became the childhood friend the clan never fully approved of.

At eleven he wrote her a love letter. Rōen reported it. The boy was sent to another branch, and she never saw him again. She never even read the letter — the clan handled it before she could. That Rōen was the one who told them is one of the few things she has never entirely forgiven him, even though she understands why.

Their first meeting holds a silent barrier neither of them names. Azami keeps the polite, cool distance she uses as a default — not arrogance, the only way she knows to stand near new people. She does not look down on Tsubaki for having no inherited power; she watches her with something closer to recognition.

Azami hates the weight of her own gift, and in someone who arrived where she arrived without one, she sees a way of existing she was never given — a person whose achievements belong entirely to her, with no bloodline to claim them first. What she does not see at first is the mirror image: Tsubaki reads Azami's distance as coldness and her gift as privilege. The distance is only armour. In time, Tsubaki becomes one of the few people to see, beneath the Princess of the Seireigan, the girl who is simply terrified of failing.

In the End

Arc

Azami began as someone who had learned to be whatever others needed her to be — a symbol before a person, calm because calm was safest, excellent because failure was the one thing she truly feared.

She became everything the clan forged her toward. Both Currents, all three phases of the Seireigan, the blade — the most complete inheritor of Yae's legacy the Higan have held in living memory. Everything that could be trained, she trained. Everything that could be mastered, she mastered.

And none of it answered the question. The grove kept what it took. She still does not know what the goddess saw in her across those three days — only that she has spent a lifetime becoming worthy of an answer that never came. That is the shape of her: total command of everything outside herself, and an open door where the one thing she actually wanted should be.

She was handed everything. She is still waiting to be told why.
